“Skuller embraces the dark and moody but injects the tender promise of hope. Not an easy thing for most singers to pull off. ”

The Big Takeover Magazine: "Skuller’s vocal sits at the centre of that intimacy. His delivery has a crooner’s sense of phrasing, loosened by air, age, and feeling. He does not push the song toward imitation, which is the more difficult choice in a cover this closely tied to Waits. Instead, he lets the words carry their own ache."

"...the vocals convey an ethereal air that sometimes recalls Marc Bolan and Boy George, while the storytelling style emphasizes the value of each word. The combination of classic atmosphere, gentle rock orchestration, and sensitive vocals creates an attractive and fascinating ballad that increases in attractiveness with every listen." – Skylight

“….(Eddie) places a jazzier tone against a sparsely arranged upright bass forms the core of a great late night listen. His lighter tones also bring out a little more emotion from a lyric that’s full of gentle anguish, sitting perfectly against a few sparingly applied guitar strums that cling onto a Marc Ribot-esque tone.” – Real Gone Rocks

"Skuller’s clear, elevated vocal tone differs sharply from Waits’ weathered delivery, and the recording does not attempt to conceal that contrast. His interpretation favours patience and emotional openness, allowing the composition to function more like a reflective standard than a character-driven performance." – Experiment

about

"Skuller's lofty tenor is too original to pigeonhole.” – NEW YORK TIMES

Eddie Skuller explores the dark, poetic world of Tom Waits with diverse selections from his extensive catalog. Although Skuller’s amber-saturated vocals contrast with Wait’s raucous gravel-like voice, there is a connection channeled through the music's emotional depth and lyrical intensity. Skuller can forge a deep, powerful bond with his audience, which enhances the tragic expression at the core of Waits’ music.  “I connect with the strange nature of life expressed in Waits’ songs through themes of sorrow, regret, desire and dreams,” says Skuller.

This show features many songs from Tom Waits’ extensive catalog including the ageless treasures “I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You,” “San Diego Serenade,” “Ol’ 55,” “Downtown Train,” and “Jersey Girl.”

Eddie Skuller is accompanied by Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs, Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller) on keyboards and Jeremy Chatzky (Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Laura Cantrell) on upright bass.  Both musicians are masters of the New York music scene with whom Skuller has performed as a perennial guest singer with The Losers Lounge, an acclaimed tribute series that appears at Joe’s Pub and City Winery.

Eddie Skuller's BALLADS OF TOM WAITS is an honest, emotionally rich tribute to one of America’s greatest songwriters.
